BEREA -- A day after trading running back Trent Richardson to the Colts, the Cleveland Browns signed running back Willis McGahee on Thursday.

A day after trading running back Trent Richardson to the Colts, the Cleveland Browns reportedly signed running back Willis McGahee on Thursday.

Citing an unidentified source, NFL.com is reporting the signing after the veteran passed a team physical.

McGahee rushed for 731 yards with four touchdowns in 10 games for the Denver Broncos last season before going down with a torn MCL in his right knee. The Broncos released him in the offseason.

He had visited the New York Giants last week when that club was looking for help in the backfield. However, the Giants opted for Brandon Jacobs instead.

In 130 career games, McGahee has rushed for 8,097 yards with 63 touchdowns. He also has 202 catches for 1,319 yards and five scores, while his 33 career 100-yard rushing games are tied for second-most among active players.

The Browns also said on Thursday quarterback Brandon Weeden is going to see a specialist for his injured right thumb.

Weeden suffered the injury after hitting his hand on a helmet during the fourth quarter of Week 2's 14-6 loss in Baltimore. He was diagnosed with a sprained thumb on Monday, but the visit to the specialist was needed after X- rays came back negative.

Weeden passed for 227 yards before leaving the game. The 2012 first-round pick has thrown for 516 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions this season for the Browns (0-2).

Brian Hoyer has already been named the starting quarterback for Cleveland's Week 3 game at Minnesota.
