High school football roundup: Benedictine wins in classic, Aurora continues to falter

Benedictine (5-1) 31, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (5-1) 24 (OT)

This one was thrilling from start to finish, but it saved the best for last:

With 3 minutes left, Benedictine's Devon Fox took a fumble back 85 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 21. Things later looked bleak for the Bengals, though, after a muffed punt set up a 47-yard Lions field goal with just 39 seconds to go. However, Benedictine quickly drove into NDCL territory, and freshman Ivan Shuran's 45-yard field goal attempt as time expired barely made it over the crossbar to send the game into overtime.

In OT, Devon Fox was the hero for Benedictine: The junior put the Bengals ahead with a 2-yard touchdown grab off a tipped pass, and on the next drive picked off an NDCL pass to preserve the 31-24 road win.

Kirtland (6-0) 35, Independence (4-2) 7

Joey Torok scored 2 touchdowns, including a 5-yard run that capped a nearly 7-minute drive for the Hornets. With the win, Kirtland and Cuyahoga Heights are now the only unbeaten teams in the Chagrin Valley Conference's Valley division.

Rootstown (6-0) 51, Southeast (4-2) 20

In remaining unbeaten in the PTC County division, the Rovers found multiple ways to score: Caleb Kaut ran it in five times (including a 40-yard scamper), and Nathan Moore took an interception back 98 yards for a score.

Olmsted Falls (5-1) 39, Amherst Steele (4-2) 14

In a battle of two one-loss teams, the Bulldogs prevailed to get a big Southwestern Conference win. Five different players scored touchdowns for Olmsted Falls, including quarterback Teddy Grendzynski, who also threw for a score.

Barberton (6-0) 34, Aurora (2-4) 7

Quarterback Zane Ries threw for 2 touchdowns and ran another in from 72 yards out to keep the Magics unbeaten. At 2-4, the Greenmen are off to their worst start in at least 18 years.
