Gilmour girls basketball defeats NEO Prep, 108-1

GATES MILLS - GATES MILLS -- The Gilmour Academy girls varsity basketball team defeated a competitor, 108-1, Wednesday night.

The top-seeded Lancers defeated 13th-seeded Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School, 108-1, in a Division III sectional semifinal game.

When reached for comment Thursday afternoon, NEO Prep athletic director Justin Shullick released the following statement:

On Wednesday, February 17, our Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School girls basketball team played Gilmour Academy. While the final score did not result in our favor, the entire I CAN SCHOOLS network of campuses is extremely proud of the camaraderie and sportsmanship that our team displayed during and after the game. At Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School, our scholars are taught to embody respect, responsibility, and relentlessness. All three characteristics were on display yesterday. We faced an incredibly talented team, and we congratulate Gilmour Academy on their victory and pursuit of a championship.

Gilmour led 72-1 at the half.

"Last night's game is the type of game that isn't much fun for either team," Gilmour Academy athletic director Jeff Walrich said when reached via phone Thursday afternoon. "We did what we could to slow the game down. There is some misinformation out there that we pressed the whole game and kept our starters in the whole game, and that just isn't true.".

Walrich estimated that the Lancers' starters played for slightly more than the length of one quarter spread out throughout the contest. Mass substitutions began late in the first quarter.

"There is no way to speed up the game or call the game," Walrich said. "We tried to do our best on getting into a zone and putting our arms up. It's unfortunate that the other team went 0-for-28 from the field."

NEO Prep made one free throw.

"Everyone sees the score and just assumes we were doing things and trying to run up the score," Walrich said. "That is not who we are and what we believe in."

Walrich declined to share the team's scorebook from the game when asked to do so on Friday.

"We are not able to provide a copy of the scorebook as we feel that that would put the focus of this on our players," the GA athletic director said. "At this point, we are moving forward and focusing on tomorrow's game."

The win advances the Lancers to the sectional final on Saturday. They'll play Wickliffe, the No. 11 seed.
