Two Northeast Ohio high school softball squads won state championships in Akron on Saturday while one area baseball team won the big-school state title in Columbus.
Hoover wins fourth-straight state title
The North Canton Hoover softball team furthered its distinction as one of the state's most dominant programs by defeating Grove City 6-1 at Firestone Stadium in the Division I title game to secure the program's eighth state championship and its fourth overall.
Senior Tara Thacker struck out eight batters en route to earning her 26th win of the season. The Vikings' offense was spearheaded by junior catcher Kathleen Shier, who hit a three-run home run and tallied four RBIs in the victory.
Cuyahoga Heights wins state title in dramatic fashion
The Cuyahoga Heights softball team edged Minster 2-1 in the Division IV state title game to capture the school's first team championship in any sport.
Junior Brittany Nero's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed sophomore Morgan Orlowski to score from third base to record the decisive run. Redskins pitching ace Meridith Chopka struck out six batters while limiting the opposition to two hits to record her 21st victory of the season.
Jackson wins Division I baseball title
The Jackson baseball team defeated North Royalton 5-1 in the Division I state title game at Huntington Park to win the program's first-ever state championship. The Polar Bears (26-5) scored two runs in the first inning and a run apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh.
Seniors Kyle Mottice and Mike McCann each tallied two hits. Sophomore pitcher Sam Miller limited North Royalton to two hits en route to earning his ninth victory on the mound.
