John's Take: Cavs offer was cause for excitement

I am so focused on the NBA Finals. Game 3 is tonight. It's not a must win for the Spurs. It's more of a don't-let-LeBron-dominate game.

But for a moment, I actually got a little excited about the Cavs. Their name, and the name John Calipari, were used in the same sentence.

ESPN says the Cavs offered Calipari nearly $80 million for 10 years to leave Kentucky and his Final 4 factory. Sounds like way overpaid, but consider this, the Knicks will give their head coaching job to Derek Fisher and pay him $5 million a year.

We know Calipari can coach young players. The Cavs have those, including another number one pick. And Calipari is close friends with LeBron. He could have been the ticket to getting LeBron to come back after this or next season. That makes you an automatic contender in the East.

But Calipari turned down the Cavs to stay at Kentucky for $28 million less. It shows that all the money in the world is still not enough to get the big names to come to the Cavs.

I'm not saying Calipari would have worked, but he had success with the Nets in the '90s. And it would have given this franchise some life. Right now, a little life would be nice as I watch the Spurs and Heat play for another title.
