Quicken Loans Arena is getting its upgrade. But Cleveland will have to wait until at least 2021 for its next NBA All-Star Game.
According to ESPN, the NBA is expected to announce on Friday that Chicago will hold its 2020 All-Star Game. Cleveland had previously been vying to host the league's next available All-Star Game, targeting the 2020 and 2021 exhibitions.
The prospect of hosting such game had been one of the major selling points for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they pitched their proposal for renovations to Quicken Loans Arena. After a deal between the team and city to upgrade 'The Q' was temporarily put on hold, construction on the project began in September -- just beating the Sept. 15 deadline the NBA had given the Cavs to keep Cleveland in consideration for the 2020 or 2021 All-Star Game.
But as the Cavs learned on Thursday, it will be another Midwest city hosting the 2020 All-Star Game. Could Cleveland be in line to host the 2021 event? It will now likely have to wait at least one more year to find out.
