CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Cavaliers were feeling good following Wednesday's commanding win over the Toronto Raptors to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
But the discussion turned a bit more solemn during the postgame press conferences when LeBron James was asked to address a racial incident that occurred within the sports world this week.
On Monday, Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones claimed he was the victim of racial slurs at Fenway Park in Boston. According to USA Today, Jones was taunted during the game and a bag of peanuts was thrown at him.
The following day, Red Sox fans game Jones a standing ovation prior to his first at-bat.
During his postgame press conference Wednesday, James was asked what must be done to mitigate racism within society.
"It’s a delicate situation," James answered. "Racism, we know, exists. You try not to put yourself in a position, for me as a father, I try to give my kids the blueprint on how life is going to be, but at the end of the day, I can only tell them so much, and they have to live it themselves. For me, I just try to be respectful, for one, respectful to others, and I feel like if you do that consistently, then I believe the karma will come back to you."
James admitted he wasn't fully aware of the incident involving Adam Jones, because James has not been active on social media since the start of the playoffs, a move he calls "Zero dark thirty."
James did say other athletes have claimed to be victims of racial slurs while playing in Boston, but he has never personally heard any.
“It’s not great for sports," James said. "It’s not great for society. You've got guys like Martin Luther King, who all he talked about was trying to unite all of us — no matter the color, no matter the race, no matter the shape or size."
