NBA playoff scenarios on final day of season

If the Chicago Bulls want to make the playoffs – a prospect that seemed preposterous at several points during the 2016-17 season – all they have to do is beat the Brooklyn Nets Wednesday on the final night of the regular season.

And the Nets already have determined that these players won’t play against the Bulls: Trevor Booker (rest); Jeremy Lin (rest); Brook Lopez (rest); Quincy Acy (ankle); Joe Harris (shoulder); Sean Kilpatrick (hamstring).

That’s bad news for the Miami Heat who need to beat the Washington Wizards at home and have the Bulls lose to complete an incredible comeback and make the playoffs. The Heat were 11-30 at the midway point of the season, and with a win against Washington, they will finish the second half of the season 30-11.

Indiana, which plays nothing-to-gain Atlanta, can make the playoffs with a victory over the Hawks. They could also miss the playoffs if they lose and the Bulls and Heat win.

As for the top seed in the East, it’s simple. If Boston beats Milwaukee, it gets the No. 1 seed. If Cleveland, which plays Toronto, wins and Boston loses, the Cavs will be the top seed.

Playoff scenarios in the East:

Boston will be:

No. 1 if Celtics win or Cavaliers lose

No. 2 if Celtics lose and Cavaliers win

Cleveland will be:

No. 1 if Cavaliers win and Celtics lose

No. 2 if Celtics win or Cavaliers lose

Indiana will be:

No. 7 if Pacers win or if Pacers lose and Heat and Bulls both lose

No. 8 if Pacers lose and either Bulls or Heat win (but not both)

Eliminated if Pacers lose and both Bulls and Heat win

Chicago will be:

No. 7 if Bulls win and Pacers lose

No. 8 if Bulls win and Pacers win or if Bulls lose and Heat lose

Eliminated if Bulls lose and Heat win

Miami will be:

No. 8 8 if Heat and Bulls win and Pacers lose OR if Heat and Pacers win and Bulls lose

Eliminated if Bulls and Pacers win or Heat lose
