OAKLAND, Calif. — According to Twitter at least, Kevin Durant v. Rihanna has suddenly become the most hyped match-up of the NBA Finals — yet there was a time that the Golden State Warriors star felt far more warmly towards the pop icon.
The Warriors’ comprehensive Game One victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers was notable for two things; Durant’s show-stopping performance, and what seemed to be a running battle with LeBron James-fan Rihanna, sat courtside.
However, it was just six years ago that a much younger Durant, talking on social media during the 2011 NBA lockout, said that he wanted to marry the Barbados-born performing artist.
And a year after that, he made an appeal on his birthday for Rihanna to send him celebratory wishes.
Somebody get @Rihanna to wish me a happy birthday and I'll be good..ya understand— Kevin Durant (@KDTrey5) September 29, 2012
Which were quickly delivered.
Things were decidedly more frosty on Thursday, though. Early in the game, Rihanna could be heard shouting “Brick” from the sidelines as Durant attempted a free throw.
His answer was the one that set social media ablaze — a three-pointer followed by a pointed stare in her direction.
“I don’t even remember that,” Durant said, when asked about it in his post-game press conference, looking at Stephen Curry alongside him. Curry, laughing, told his teammate not to “fall into that trap.”
“I’m cool,” Durant said. “Have fun with that.”
The fans certainly will.
