Cleveland Browns to play Minnesota Vikings in London October 29

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns will make their regular-season debut in London, England, on Sunday, October 29.

For the first time since the 1989 preseason, the Browns will fly across the Atlantic Ocean to play a game against the Minnesota Vikings at Twickenham Stadium in London, England, the league announced when it released the 2017 regular-season schedule Thursday night.

The Browns-Vikings matchup is part of the 2017 NFL International Series and will take place in Week 8 of the regular season.

“The London game comes at a really good time,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “With the bye following the game, it’s great to have that at the mid-season point. It’s going to be good to coach against an old friend in Mike Zimmer, across the pond. No doubt that Zim will have his team ready to go, and so will we.

“It should be a great experience for our team to represent the City of Cleveland internationally.”

The Browns have never played a regular-season game abroad, but have done so three times in the preseason.

The Browns first travelled out of the country during the 1988 preseason when they took on the New York Jets in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and then, faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles in front of 73,677 fans in London in the 1989 preseason.

The Browns last played internationally during the 1993 preseason, when they travelled to Toronto to play the New England Patriots.

In their history, the Browns have a 4-10-0 record against the Vikings franchise, including a 2-4-0 record at home and a 2-6-0 mark on the road. However, the Browns defeated the Vikings, 31-27, in their last meeting in Minnesota on September 22, 2013.

Although the Browns have struggled to win since their return to the NFL in 1999, they have fan clubs all over the world, including one in the United Kingdom, the British Bulldawgs Browns Backers from Leicester Square in London.

Including the London-based group, the Browns Backers have six chapters across Europe.

“We have a lot of work in front of us before we get to the point of playing games, but we’ve had a good first week to start the offseason program,” Jackson said. “And now, we have the schedule to look toward.”
