NEW YORK -- The Browns' Donte' Stallworth has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL without pay.

The move comes just days after Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter in Miami.

The judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail for fatally striking a pedestrian with his car on March 14.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed Stallworth of the suspension via letter. It read in part:

"The conduct reflected in your guilty plea resulted in the tragic loss of life and was inexcusable. While the criminal justice system has determined the legal consequences of this incident, it is my responsibility as NFL Commissioner to determine appropriate league discipline for your actions, which have caused irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the NFL."

Commissioner Goodell says a meeting will be scheduled with Stallworth and his represenatives at which time a final decision on discipline will be determined. Goodell also informed the wide receiver he cannot visit Browns' training facilities or take part in practices with the team.

The letter concludes:

"Everyone associated with the league derives tremendous benefits from participating in our game and from the extraordinary support we receive from the public. With these benefits comes, among other things, the responsibility to conduct ourselves in a lawful and responsible way, with no entitlement to or expectation of favorable treatment."

As part of the legal case against him, Stallworth reached a financial agreement with the family of the victim, 59-year-old Mario Reyes. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Reyes left behind a teenage daughter.

Once he completes his jail sentence, Stallworth still must serve 2 years under house arrest and 8 years on probation. The terms of the house arrest would allow for him to resume his playing career, if and when the commissioner determines the suspension to be completed.
