LORAIN, Ohio-- A man crashed his car into a Lorainapartment complex near East 30th Street and Globe Avenue before two standoffs with police Sunday night, investigators say.

The altercation apparently began as an alleged domestic violence situation Sunday night.

The man involved left the apartment after police responded to the domestic incident, a witness said.

The man returned to the apartment later on Sunday night, when the woman was with a friend in another apartment unit at the same complex.

He allegedly kicked down the door, threatening to harm himself or others with a gun, the witness said.

Police arrived and he fled the apartment. He tried to drive away, but crashed into the apartment building, police said.

When an officer tried to confront him, the man opened fire on the officer.

The police officer took cover and was not injured.

The man then fled to the other side of the complex, along E. 29th Street.

Police confronted the man, who held a gun to his head. The standoff lasted for about 35 minutes until the man opened fire on police.

Officers returned fire, hitting the man. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by Metro Life Flight, police said.

No officers were reported injured, an investigator said.
