MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP -- The newly opened Observatory Park hosted hundreds of amateur and experienced astronomersfor theVenus transit, Tuesday evening.

Members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society brought telescopes, and naturalists from the Geauga Park District offered lessons.

At 6:04 p.m., hundreds of people, from families with children to grandparents gazed through filtered telescopes, or donned protective eyewear to see the tiny planet glide across the sun's surface.

It was also a chance for people to experience the newly opened Observatory Park. One of the only Dark Sky Parks east of the Mississippi River, the site is an excellent location for sky gazing, especially at night.

A grand opening event will take place June 16.
