AKRON -- When President Barack Obama arrived at Ann's Place for breakfast Friday morning, he greeted and hugged the diner's owner, Josephine "Ann" Harris. Just hours later, Harriswas dead.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says Harris passed away of natural causes at 11:18 a.m. at Akron General Medical Center.
She was 70 years old.
CNN reports that Obama called the woman's daughter from Air Force One to express his condolences.
Greg Schultz, the Ohio state director of Obama for America, issued the following statement regarding her death:
"We are extremely saddened by Ann's sudden passing today. Our sincere condolences go to Ann's family during this difficult time. As a small business owner, a mother, a sister, a grandmother, a great grandmother and friend of many throughout the community, Ann led an exceptional life and will be missed by all who knew her. Ann and her family are in our thoughts and prayers."
According to the Beacon Journal, she had been rushed to the hospital having felt fatigue and tingling.
President Obama arrived at the diner on South Hawkins Avenue around 8:30 a.m. after spending the night in Fairlawn.
He made severalcampaign stops in Ohio on Thursday including Parma and Sandusky.
