COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Historical Society's first Military Appreciation Day includes the dedication of 25 headstones for previously unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers buried in Columbus.
The society offered free admission to the Ohio History Center on Saturday for active military members and their families, as well as discounts for veterans. The day's activities included demonstrations by Civil War re-enactors and an actual wedding with a Civil War theme.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the idea for the promotion grew out of collaborations to plan a ceremony to dedicate the civil war graves. One of the researchers involved says the dedication includes elements of a traditional military funeral.
