AKRON-- For the first time, Akron will be a host city for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cureevent.

It will be held this Sunday, July 29.

Registration is from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The event raises money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

Dr. Lyndsay Harris, from the UH Seidman Cancer Center- which has partnered with Susan G. Komen, says many forms of breast cancer are curable.

Dr. Harris says 70% of women who are diagnosed today, are cured.

But while a lot of progress has been made, more research still needs to be done.

Which is why events like the Akron Race for the Cure event is so important.

So far this year, Komen Northeast Ohio has granted $1.1 million to 17 organizations in local communities.

The money raised by these events go towards breah health information, free mammogram or support services.
