Showers and thunderstorms continued for the central U.S. today, as well as the Southeastern states.

A low pressure system developed over the Central and Northern Plains and produced a frontal boundary that moved into the Midwest. This system allowed for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop from the Upper Midwest through the Mid-Mississippi River Valley.

Severe thunderstorms have not yet developed, but the system has a history of producing large hail and strong winds. In the East, a frontal boundary moved off the East Coast and allowed for higher pressure to build in.This brought an end to showers and thunderstorms for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

However, the tail-end of the front lingered over the Carolinas and Gulf states. This brought more showers and thunderstorms to the region throughout the day. Some of these storms created periods of heavy rainfall due to abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

Heaviest rainfall was reported in Savannah, Ga., with a midday total of 2.28 inches. Meanwhile out West, a ridge of high pressure continued to build over the West Coast. This created another hot day for the deserts with highs surpassing 110 degrees.

The Pacific Northwest saw cooler conditions as onshore flow pushed in cooler air and clouds. High fire danger continued for most of the Western U.S.
