CLEVELAND -- The Clevleand Metropolitan School District is facing a critical start to the school year.
The district is grappling with layoffs, shorter school days and a mega-levy on the ballot in November.
WKYC's Kim Wheeler was there for the first day of school.
By all accounts, the first day went pretty smoothly.
In fact,CEO Eric Gordon gave opening day an A minus or B plus.
Some good news is thatthe district cut walking distance for kids in half. For grades k to 8 they won't have to walk more than one mile each way to school.
For high school, they used to have to walk 6 miles round trip and now it's3 miles round trip.
