WESTLAKE -- Police Capt. Guy Turner says this referee will wear stripes of a different kind soon.
Turner saysa high school referee enroute to officiate at the Westlake-Olmsted Falls football game was arrested for marijuana possession in the police station parking lot.
Just before 6 p.m. Friday, Roger Ward, 22, of Chardon, drove into the Westlake police station lot, identified himself as a referee who was to officiate at the Westlake vs. Olmsted Falls football game nearby, and asked an officer where he could park.
The police officer -- the same K9 handler who had a pot-smoker pull alongside his cruiser earlier this month -- noticed the pungent odor of raw marijuana emitting from Ward's car, as well as the stems and marijuana on the center console.
Police seized $1,391from the vehicle, as well as a scale, pipe, marijuana in jars and plastic containers, cigars filled with marijuana, plastic baggies, and a knife.
Ward was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of criminal tools, carrying various weapons, and preparation of drugs for shipment.
He was transferred to the Cuyahoga County Jail Monday.
He was not wearing his referee uniform when arrested. He has a 2010 disorderly conduct conviction from the Chardon Municipal Court.
The environmentally friendlyconcept of pot-purveyors driving to our station and introducing themselves is duly noted and it saves on municipal gasoline expenses.
