AKRON -- The driver of an car walked away unhurt after his vehicle ended up in the Cuyahoga River.

The driver, Robert Buger, 50, said he was driving home from work and was on Akron-Peninsula Road near the Portage Trail intersection just after1 a.m. Tuesday when he said he had to swerve to avoid a deer.

That's when he said he swerved, drove along the concrete barrier atop the bridge, and then the car fell 25 feet into the river.

Buger said he then walked home, about two miles from the crash site. He doesn't remember getting out of the car or swimming to shore.

Buger will be charged with failure to control.

The car ended up upside down, submerged in the river. Divers searched the river because initial reports indicated the driver was stuck in the vehicle.

Police called Bugge and hecame back to thecrash siteand said he was unhurt.

Buggeescaped with only cuts, bruises and big black eye.
