CHAGRIN FALLS -- Nearly 500 students took part in the annual Walk To School and To Town Day in Chagrin Falls on Friday.The idea is to show students that walking to school is healthy and fun.

Middle school students formed teams, wore costumes and held a pep rally after their walk.Chagrin Falls Intermediate School students gathered at the downtown library. After their walk to school, they found bagels and hot chocolate waiting for them.

The event was created by Safe Routes Chagrin, a group that is receivingnational attention by making walking and biking better in the village.

"We started as a group of parents who noticed that there were some things that we wanted to address in our community to make things safer for kids who wanted to walk to school or bike to school," said Safe Routes Chagrin President Kathryn Garvey.

"And now we've grown.We have over 100 volunteers, we have involvement from our local police department, the Chagrin Falls Village Council, the Chagrin Falls school board, and the school administration as well."

Safe Routes Chagrin is working to make crosswalks safer and to build new sidewalks in Chagrin Falls.
