Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Joe Harris poured in 19 points as the Virginia Cavaliers overcame a first half deficit to defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels, 61-52, in the ACC opener for both teams at John Paul Jones Arena.
Although no other player scored in double figures for Virginia (11-3, 1-0 ACC), all nine players who took the floor tallied points. Akil Mitchell grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have won six of their last seven contests.
For UNC (10-4, 0-1), Reggie Bullock netted a game-high 22 points, while James Michael McAdoo added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Although the Tar Heels shot just 32 percent from the floor in the first half, they were able to take a 25-24 lead into intermission by going 7-of-12 from the foul line. The Cavaliers made just 9-of-24 attempts from the field in the opening 20 minutes and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Virginia's field goal shooting improved to 52 percent after halftime, and it was able to take control of the game thanks in large part to 15-2 run midway through the second half and a 10-0 spurt in the final minutes.
The Cavaliers were aided by an efficient night from beyond the arc (8-of-14), while UNC was just 5-of-17 from 3-point range.
