AKRON -- Something big is coming to Canal Park.
The Akron Aeros will unleash the largest video board in Double-A baseball for the upcoming season, nearly quadrupling the size of the screen currently installed at Canal Park.
The new main video board, a $1.65 million privately funded project, will be an HD15 screen with an active display area that's 26 feet tall and 68 feet wide. Coupled with the 8' x 3' digital line score board, there will be almost 2,000 square feet of HD LED display.
"The video board is just part of our commitment to our fans and the city of Akron," Aeros owner Ken Babby says. "We are obsessed about giving our fans the very best experience possible and this is one of many new enhancements Aeros fans can look forward to in 2013."
In addition, Canal Park will also install an HD LED ribbon scoreboard display in left-center field to showcase out-of-town scores and other game information.
Daktronics, the world's largest supplier of large screen video displays and electronic scoreboards, was hired for the project design.
"We pride ourselves on providing affordable family entertainment and fans will certainly get their money's worth this season with an unparalleled experience at the ballpark," says Aeros general manager Jim Pfander.
The current video board, which was installed in 2006, is 18 feet tall and 25 feet wide.
In 2012, the Aeros had the best regular-season record in all of Double-A baseball and won the Eastern League Championship for the fourth time in team history.
The team begins its 17th season in Akron on April 4, 2013.
