Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Kevin Bailey scored a game-high 18 points, leading four starters in double figures, as the Portland Pilots held on for a 70-67 win over the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference battle at the Chiles Center.
Ryan Nicholas and Derrick Rodgers both tallied 15 points for the Pilots (11-18, 4-10 WCC), followed by Thomas van der Mars with 10 points and a game- high 10 rebounds as the team won for the second time in the last three outings.
The Toreros (13-15, 6-7) were led by Johnny Dee with 12 points, while Chris Manresa and Ken Rancifer both dropped in 12 points for a squad that lost for the third time in as many games.
Portland, which held the visitors to just 37.0 percent shooting from the floor and 1-of-7 beyond the arc in the first half, closed the period on an 8-0 run in order to take a 31-27 lead at the break.
In the second half USD remained competitive with a sizzling 60.0 percent accuracy from the floor, but at the same time the hosts made good on 53.6 percent from the field as well.
Both teams hit jumpers within seconds of each other down the stretch, but with 6.9 seconds remaining Portland's Bryce Pressley knocked down a pair of free throws to put the hosts up by four at 68-64.
At the other Dee made good on his third 3-pointer of the night to draw the visitors to within one, but Nicholas then converted a pair of free throws for the Pilots with 1.5 seconds left to secure the three-point win.
Portland picked up the victory thanks to a 19-12 scoring advantage at the charity stripe.
