Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Foster scored a game-high 23 points as the Santa Clara Broncos delivered a 77-67 win over the Vermont Catamounts in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational Tournament at the Leavey Center.
Foster, who shot 3-of-8 behind the 3-point line, added five steals and four assists for the Broncos (22-11), while Marc Trasolini pitched in with 20 points and seven rebounds, followed by Evan Roquemore with 12 points and six assists. Yannick Atanga contributed with a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Catamounts (21-12) were led by Sandro Carissimo who tallied 14 points, Clancy Rugg added 13, Trey Blue 12 points and Luke Apfeld 11 and six boards off the bench.
Guilty of 10 turnovers and shooting just 2-of-7 behind the 3-point line in the first half, Vermont was lucky to be locked at 27-27 at the half with the Broncos. Santa Clara converted 6-of-13 beyond the arc through the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half the Broncos erupted for 63.6 percent accuracy from the floor, not to mention 21-of-26 shooting at the free-throw line, as the hosts pulled away late for the double-digit win.
Vermont, which turned the ball over a total of 16 times, generated only 12 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds and was outscored at the charity stripe, 22-10.
The Broncos will take on either Western Illinois or Purdue in the next round of the tourney.
