The Ohio high school softball season began over the weekend.

The current weather in Northeast Ohio may make it seem more like winter than spring, but that optic yellow ball has started flying and teams have begun the hunt for a championship.

As a tip of the cap to the start of the 2013 season, USATodayhss.com/Cleveland would like to highlight 10 players to watch in Northeast Ohio. We're excited to unveil our American Family Insurance All-Northeast Ohio Softball Team.

The 10 student-athletes listed below were selected by USATodayhss.com/Cleveland staff members as players to watch this spring.

Uniontown Lake senior shortstop/outfielder McKenna Stephens - signed with Michigan State

Brooklyn senior pitcher Jocelyn Rivera - signed with Ball State

Avon Lake senior infielder Alexis Thomas - signed with Wright State

North Canton Hoover junior infielder Jenna Lilley - verbal to Oregon

Canton Central Catholic junior infielder Caitlin Gambone - verbal to Akron

Compiling a preseason watch list is a subjective task that often sparks debate. That is why, throughout the course of the past week, we asked our social media followers to tell us the players they believed deserved recognition.

The responses we received are below. Be sure to join the conversation by connecting with USATodayhss.com/Cleveland through Facebook and/or Twitter. Your social media comments will be added to the story.
