FAIRLAWN, Ohio-- What started as a police pursuit ended in a fiery crash right across the street from Summit Mall.
Fairlawn police say they attempted to stop a stolen SUV after receiving reports of a person driving erratically on West Market Street.
After following the SUV for three blocks, police say they ended the chase but not before a passenger jumped out of the car and fled on foot.
Police said the vehicle continued on West Market Street where it lost control, crashed into several parked cars parked at the Hilton Inn and a tree, before overturning and crashing into a utility pole, causing it to break.
The car then caught on fire. Police officers who arrived on scene said they pulled a woman from the burning car, and the driver had been ejected.
Both were taken to the hospital andtheir injuries at this hour are not known. No other injuries are being reported and no arrests have been made.
Utility crews are working to repair the utility pole. As a result, West Market Streetwas closed between Smith and Ghent roads. It reopened early Friday morning.
