CLEVELAND -- Dan Gilbert addressed the annual meeting of Positively Cleveland Tuesday.
He spoke about his massive development efforts in Detroit and his plans for the second phase of his casino.Gilbert says he hopes the riverfront location for phase 2 canbe a catalyst for development in Cleveland.
Gilbert is leading a massive effort to revive the down-and-out downtown of his hometown Detroit. He's spent more than a billion dollars, buying and renovating buildings, moving Quicken Loans headquarters downtown and helping rebrand the city.
Gilbert says there's never been a doubt the riverfront Casino would be built in Cleveland.
He expressed in possibly buying neighboring buildings to the site.
He says engineers and architects are at work, but would offer no timeline, saying it won't be 7 to 10 years.
He says he is satisfied with the first year of the Horseshoe Casino. Revenues were under projections. But Gilbert claims lessons learned about running an urban casino were more valuable.
He says the phase two casino would be more deluxe and have more attractions than Horseshoe.
Gilbert says Cleveland needs to do a better job of branding and being more positive about itself.
He says its self-image has improved from when he arrived here eight years ago and had natives ask why he was investing money in their city.
He says Cleveland is better positioned to continue its downtown comeback because many projects are already in place or coming soon and the city is in sound financial shape.
Detroit's teetering on the verge of possible bankruptcy and has a court-ordered lawyer overseeing city government's spending.
Gilbert also talked about the Cavs winning the NBA draft lottery and the first pick again. He even fieldeda question about LeBron James possibly coming back to the Cavs without ruling it out.
