CANAL FULTON -- Police, fire, and HAZMAT crews responded to a small apartment building after a fire started, the result of an active meth lab.

Police received the call around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police confirm the fire was started while someone was attempting to cook methamphetamine in the basement of the building on Cathedral Circle.

Fire crews responded first and were able to put the fire out quickly. The building has smoke damage throughout, but not much damage from fire.

Police arrived shortly after fire crews. That's when a man and a woman ran from the scene with a 6-month-old child. Police have not been able to find them.

A HAZMAT team was called in to remove dangerous materials from the building.

There is no word on how many people were in the building when the fire started.
