Lorton, VA (Sports Network) - Garrett Rank carded a 3-under 67 on Tuesday to claim medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
The 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up completed the stroke-play portion of the championship at 8-under-par 132.
Ian Davis shot a 1-under 69 during his second round at Laurel Hill Golf Club to claim second place at 6-under 134, while first-round leader Eric Sugimoto tripped to a 2-over 72 on Tuesday to claim third at 5-under.
Sugimoto tied the tournament record with a 63 during his opening round.
Sam Horsfield fired the low round of the day with a 4-under 66 to move into fourth place at 4-under-par 136.
Rank went out with the afternoon wave and after trading a birdie at the first with a bogey at the third, he poured in birdies at the sixth, eighth and ninth to move to 8-under and take the outright lead from Davis.
Davis was out with the morning wave and grabbed the clubhouse lead by countering bogeys at the third, sixth, and 17th with birdies at Nos. 9, 15, 16 and 18.
Rank then followed four straight pars from the 10th with a birdie at the 14th to reach 9-under, but dropped a shot at the 17th to fall back to 8-under and closed with a par at the last to remain there.
The rest of the tournament will consist of match play between the 66 players that advanced from the stroke-play portion, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Saturday.
