Lorton, VA (Sports Network) - Michael Kim and Austin Smotherman were among eight players to win a pair of matches Thursday and reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Kim, who was recently named to the U.S. Walker Cup team, ousted Lucas Kim in Thursday's second-round match, then took down Mitchell Rutledge, 3 & 2, in the third round to advance. He earned a quarterfinal matchup with Robby Shelton IV, who secured a 2-up, third-round win over Ian Davis at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Smotherman, 19, took down Thomas Lim early Thursday before defeating 51-year- old Sean Knapp, 4 & 3, in the third round. He will meet James Erkenbeck in Friday's quarterfinals.
Erkenbeck, the oldest remaining player in the field at 23 years old, defeated Mario Clemens, 5 & 4, in the third round.
Zecheng Dou advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-up victory over fellow 16- year-old Sam Horsfield. He will play Jordan Niebrugge, a 5 & 3 winner over Justin Shin.
The last quarterfinal match will pit Eric Sugimoto against Kyle Henning. The former was a 2-up winner over Cameron Peck in the third round, while the latter took down Carlson Cox IV, 1-up.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Friday. The championship wraps up on Saturday with the 36-hole final.
