CRANSTON, R.I.- Dozens of people were forced from their homes after a flash flood inundated a Rhode Island apartment complex.

Fire officials say about 60 people were displaced Monday afternoon following a quick downpour that swamped a low-lying area in Cranston, just south of Providence. Fire officials say about half of them had to be rescued by boat.

Residents in the Dean Estates apartment complex reported waist-high water. Fire officials say the water was rising so quickly they moved ground-floor residents to the second floor before taking them to safety.

Police and firefighters also had to wade through deep water to help stranded motorists. No serious injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service reports nearly 3½ inches of rain fell in Cranston on Monday.
