CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's DFAS office, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, is one of the region's biggest federal employers.
More than 2,400 people work there.
The office's duties include processing Navy and military veterans payroll.
But the union says only about 325 of the office's workers perform those essential duties that will continue in a protected status.
The other workers could be furloughed as soon as next Friday when the special fund that bankrolls DFAS is projected to run out.
Senator Sherrod Brown expressed great concern about the DFAS jobs at a Friday meeting with concerned federal workers.
