Kris Pickel is an award winning journalist with more than 2 decades of experience. Kris joined WKYC in March 2012 and is co-anchor of the 6 & 11 PM newscasts with Russ Mitchell.
Journalism has been a passion for Kris since the early 1990's. Her goal: better your community and give a voice to people whose stories may otherwise go unheard.
Kris's reputation is built on her experience and versatility, receiving recognition for her coverage of hard news reports and lighter stories. She was awarded the prestigious Edward R Murrow, honoring outstanding achievements in journalism, 3 Emmys, an Associated Press and other awards.
Kris was the first female reporter on the West Coast to enter a boot camp program for jail inmates. Instead of the typical coverage she entered the program as an inmate. Following riots and injuries that accompanied University of Arizona's NCAA win, her investigation helped lead to procedural changes for police crowd control. She has been recognized for her work in riot coverage in Oakland, an investigation into efforts to identify the Zodiac Killer, consumer, feature and medical reporting, and human interest stories.
Kris is passionate about giving back to the community. After visiting shanty towns in Mexico where children were dying from exposure, she helped organize a blanket drive and delivered supplies to the families in need. She has Co-Chaired the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women campaign, hosted an Easter Seals Telethon, worked with kids in classrooms for Love of Reading Week, served as an honorary chair for Court Appointed Special Advocates for children and countless other projects.
"It's important to not just talk about what's happening in a community but to be a part of it. I believe the best anchors spend time out in the community and not just behind the desk," says Pickel.
Kris started her career in news as a college intern and has done just about every job in a newsroom including editor, producer, assignment desk, reporter, and anchor. Her career has taken her from hometown of Sacramento, CA to Grand Junction, CO to Reno, NV to Tucson, AZ and back to Sacramento before coming to Cleveland.
Kris is married to international award winning photographer Carl Lemon who is an avid comic book collector. They are the proud parents of two boys, Clark and Bruce. If you can figure out where the names came from, you know she has a sense of humor. Hint: again, her husband is an avid comic book collector.
