FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- A southwest Ohio teacher has been disciplined for allegedly making a racially insensitive response to a black student who had said he would like to become president.

The Fairfield board of education this week suspended freshman school teacher Gil Voigt without pay. The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reports the teacher has 10 days from formal notification to appeal before the school board. Board president Dan Murray said the suspension is the first step in the termination process.

School officials say the incident came early in December. When a black student said his ambition was to be president, the white teacher allegedly responded: "We don't need another black president."

Voigt reportedly told school officials he was misquoted. He has taught at Fairfield since 2000. A message was left for him Friday.
