MEDINA COUNTY -- A heavy band of snow created whiteout conditions on highways south of Cleveland Friday leading to numerous crashes.
At one point, stretches of I-77, I-71 and I-76 were all closed in Stark, Medina and Summit Counties. The Cleveland area was largely unaffected.
The fast falling snow and whiteout led to a pileup on I-71 near Route 18 that the Montville Police reported via Twitter involved 13 vehicles.
There were no immediate reports of injuries but rescue crews were called to the scene.
Accidents also closed sections of I-76W at Barber Road and at Route 57. Crashes also forced a closure of I-77 northbound and southbound at Route 30 in Canton.
The Ohio Department of Transportation reported all lanes of I-71 were reopened as of 1:30 p.m. It was the last remaining highway to be impacted by the morning snow. All highway and lanes are now open according to ODOT.
The quick return to winter was followed by an afternoon warm-up with temperatures predicted near 50.
