AKRON -- Tyvon D. Ward, 22, of Akron, pleaded guilty today to murder; felonious assault, and endangering children.
On June 19, Ward learned that one of his girlfriends was 34 weeks pregnant. That same day, he attacked their four-year-old son, throwing him around the room.
A few hours later, Ward assaulted the girlfriend, punching her in the stomach and face.
On June 20, the girlfriend was bleeding and in so much pain that she had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. The doctors there discovered that her baby had died as a result of the beating.
While the woman was at the hospital, Ward and another girlfriend left his severely injured four-year-old son home alone.
When Akron police officers went to Ward's home to question him about his girlfriend's injuries, they found the little boy home alone, lying on the carpet.
The officers took him to Akron Children's Hospital, where they learned that Ward's attack the previous day caused fractures in the little boy's face.
Judge Lynne Callahan immediately sentenced Ward to life in prison. He will first be eligible for parole after serving 20 years in prison.
