CLEVELAND -- Geoffrey Gurkovich, 32, the man accused of fatally shooting 5-year-old Jermani Brooks was in court Thursday morning where his bond was set at $5 million.
Gurkovich's attorney entered a not guilty plea on his client's behalf. Gurkovich is charged with aggravated murder.
Gurkovich said nothing during the brief court appearance.
His arrest was announced Tuesday.
It was late Sunday night when police say Gurkovich allegedly stepped out of his SUV and opened fire near 130th Street and Crossburn Avenue. Jermani and her mother, 33-year-old Noni Brooks, who remains in the hospital, were both shot in the face. They were sitting in a nearby vehicle.
Police say Gurkovich's girlfriend was the intended target -- not Jermani and her mother.
There were two other children in the car at the time of the shooting. They were not injured, which is surprising, since police say Gurkovich was firing rounds indiscriminately.
Gurkovich remains jailed.
Meanwhile, during a records search, Channel 3 discovered that Gurkovich has been in and out of court for the last 10 years on charges of aggravated burglary, kidnapping, and domestic violence.
