A struggle following a robbery at Family Dollar left officer injured, suspect hospitalized
CLEVELAND -- A police officer was injured and a suspect was shot in a store robbery on the city's east side.
Police responded to a robbery in progress around 9 p.m. at the Family Dollar on Payne Ave. on Saturday.
They found two suspects in the store, who quickly fled on foot.
Two Cleveland Police officers pursued them. One of the officers struggled with one of the suspects, 21-year-old Alex A. Littlejohn of Cleveland.
Littlejohn was shot during the struggle and was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. He remains in police custody while being treated for a gunshot wound to the side. He is in stable condition.
The officer was also injured during that struggle. The injured officer was treated and released from Charity St. Vincent Hospital.
The second suspect, 24-year-old John H. Tisdale of Maple Heights, was chased to the area of East 32nd St., where he was arrested. He was later booked at the Justice Center.
A loaded handgun was recovered from the scene, as well as the money the suspects attempted to steal.
The store was occupied by several employees and patrons, who the suspects detained during the robbery. None of the bystanders were injured.
Cleveland Police are still investigating.
