CLEVELAND -- Tips from the public led to the swift arrest of Monday's Fugitive of the Week, accused of a 'cold case' rape back in 1994.
At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the U.S. Marshal's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Anthony Savage, 40.
Savage was wanted by the Cleveland Police for rape. The charges stem from a rape that occurred back in 1994. The Cleveland Police developed new information that Savage was the man they wanted for the rape that was now considered a cold case.
Almost 20 years ago, Savage allegedly raped a woman after she declined his sexual advances. The case was turned over to the NOVFTF last month after Savage refused to come in and talk to CPD detectives.
Savage was aired yesterday on several news outlets as the "Fugitive of the Week."
The Task Force said it didn't take long for tips to start pouring in. The NOVFTF received a tip that Savage was staying with his brother at an address near the 6800 block of Polonia Avenue in Cleveland.
Task force members went to the address and located Savage hiding in the basement. Savage was arrested and taken to the Cleveland City Jail.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said, "This is why the "Fugitive of the Week" news segment was created. The public does not want dangerous criminals roaming their neighborhoods. Time and time again concerned citizens step up and help law enforcement locate fugitives and this is another excellent example of residents coming together with us to help keep the city safe."
