OBERLIN – Oberlin College plans to build a new hotel, restaurant and conference center in the name of the late Peter B. Lewis.

The chairman of Progressive Insurance donated $5 million dollars toward the project, which is part of a $250 million campaign.

The Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center will become the cornerstone of Oberlin's Green Arts District on the corner of North Main Street and East College Street.

The university says the development will incorporate renewable energy systems and will meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Platinum rating.

In addition to the 65-room hotel and conference center, the project includes new commercial and office space, a culinary training facility, and a restaurant featuring locally-grown food.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $32 million.

Groundbreaking is expected to begin this spring, and crews are aiming for a January 2016 completion date.
