AKRON -- Fall classes begin Monday for the University of Akron, and this year the school is welcoming a new president -- Dr. Scott Scarborough.
"In the first 90 days you want to meet all the people who care about this place and who are willing to help," Scarborough says. "They just need to get connected. Part of my job as president is to meet all those people and to see how best to connect them to help support the university."
Scarborough came from the University of Toledo where he served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. He also has a finance background.
Last October, statewide figures showed enrollment dropped almost 8 percent since 2007.
"The decline in enrollment is a trend that's prevalent in the Midwest and Northeast. It's due to demographic changes," he says. "There are just less students graduating from high school in these parts of the country."
Scarborough says he believes it's important to build on the University of Akron's strengths and help its students make it through graduation.
