BROOKLYN -- A couple in Brooklyn went from struggling to pay for parking at the hospital to finding a lucky penny that they used to scratch off a winning lottery ticket.

It wouldn't have happened without a last minute trip to Giant Eagle for popsicles.

"A $100,000! I just started crying. You don't believe it until you hear it. I guess is what it is," said lottery winner Elizabeth Stevens.

Elizabeth picked up the box of popsicles for her husband Tom, who's battling lung cancer.

On her way out she also bought a $5 Special Edition Cashword lottery ticket.

The two couldn't believe it when they turned in the ticket to the cashier.

"I said, 'You know, if you gave me that money right now, you know what I'd be doing?' She said 'What,' and I said, 'I would have turned around and threw the money because there was a lady behind me with two kids and a lady behind her with three kids. I always thought I wouldn't win because I always want to share," said Elizabeth.

"I can't say. It's just amazing. I'll tell you, it's just amazing," said Elizabeth's husband, Tom.

The couple has been saving every coin in a tootsie roll bank to pay for parking at MetroHealth, where Tom gets his cancer treatments.

But now, parking won't be such a struggle.

They say they have enough to pay upcoming medical bills and maybe even take a trip.

"I have heart problems. He has the cancer. He's had strokes. After he's all recuperated I told him we're gonna do something. We have to," said Elizabeth.

But despite the winnings, they can't put a price on Tom's health.

"I want to live. I want to live for her," Tom said with a tear in his eye.

The couple has won before – but no more than $500.

After taxes the Stevens get to keep $71,000.
