SOLON -- A recent Solon High School graduate, Alex Berko, is already making a name for himself in the music business. The 18-year-old musician started playing the piano when he was a kid and has gone on to compose and play for ballet companies, music programs and movies.
He began with the simple tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" when he was just 4 years old. His mother taught him one hand and without thinking, Alex taught himself the other. That's when it became crystal clear that he had a gift.
Alex began improvising and playing out his feelings on the keyboard when he was 8. He really started to compose his own songs formally at the age of 11, after meeting with famed composer, Jim Brickman .
He spent his middle and high school days totally devoted to music, singing and playing in every choir or group he could find. He's won multiple awards, including first place in the state Scholastic's competition and was ranked nationally.
College music programs were fighting over Alex, forcing him to make a tough a decision. He decided the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University was the best fit and he'll depart this fall.
He'll continue to practice writing and playing each day, even outside of what's required at school. If all goes according to plan, Alex wants to have his hands on the keyboard, making music for movies, the stage, and an audiences ear for the rest of his life.
