What's happening in Northeast Ohio to honor veterans today?
Here's a breakdown of some events:
A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. in Cleveland at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square. Mayor Frank Jackson, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Jackson and many veterans will be in attendance.
Free public tours are being offered on the USS COD Submarine Memorial from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
A brief flag ceremony will take place at noon and will include a deck-gun salute to veterans.
The USS COD is a national historical landmark. It's located at 1089 East 9th Street.
Lakewood hosts their annual Veteran's Day Ceremony starting at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park at 14532 Lake Avenue.
The event begins with the Presentation of Colors followed by the singing of the National Anthem by The Four Vet Quartet.
This year's keynote speaker is Judge Michael E. Jackson. Judge Jackson served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Viet Nam War. He was a combat officer and commanded a Marine platoon as a 2nd Lt. and a Marine company as a 1st Lt. He was awarded the following decorations for valor in combat: the Bronze Star (2); the Navy Commendation Award; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (2); and the Purple Heart.
Other highlights of this year's program include performances by the Lakewood High School Band, The Four Vet Quartet and a 21-gun salute by the Joint Veterans Honor Guard. T
The Veterans Day Ceremony is free and open to the public.
Following the ceremony, coffee and doughnuts will be offered in the Woman's Club Pavilion at Lakewood Park.
Ohio's Horseshoe Casinos are offering free buffets from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Active members of the military and veterans need to bring a valid military ID.
All veterans and military personnel can receive a free you-pick-two at any Northeast Ohio Panera Bread. A you-pick-two combo meal includes a cup of soup, half sandwich or half salad. Those in uniform or with proper military ID can participate.
7th graders at Brady Middle School at 32000 Chagrin Blvd. are honoring veterans with a special breakfast from 8 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
Veterans from VFW Post 5799 will be on hand. There will be a guest speaker. Students will introduce family members who have served in the U.S. military that will be on hand that morning, as well.
A catered breakfast is being held at Falls-Lenox Primary School in Olmsted Falls. Students are bringing relatives who have served in the military for food and several services.
The Greater Cleveland Film Commission is hosting a "Behind-the-Camera" day in which real-life heroes and their on-screen counterparts from "Band of Brothers" will share their World War II stories and discuss the production of the award-winning mini-series.
Attendees will have a chance to hear these stories first-hand and experience an exclusive behind-the-scenes conversation and peek into the lives of these men.
The event takes place at the Cleveland Intercontinental Hotel at 9801 Carnegie Avenue.
It starts at noon.
Lunch will be provided.
Skydivers will drop in on students at Elm Street Elementary School in Painesville.
The skydivers are one element of a day-long schedule of activities. In early morning, students and staff will gather at the flag pole for a school-wide Pledge of Allegiance. Throughout the day, students will visit with troops from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. The men and women veterans will bring with them military photos and equipment used for oversea tours. The troops will interact with the students in their classrooms during a "boot camp" and eat lunch with them.
They will then join them for the Veterans' Day Parade around the school grounds at the end of the school day.
A highlight of the day will take place at 1:30 p.m. when staff, students and guests will go outside and watch the descent of two skydivers from Cleveland Skydiving Center who will jump from their plane at 1:35 p.m. and land on the school grounds at approximately 1:40 p.m.
