COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio prisons guard can stay on with state under an agreement that follows a review into the suicide of a death row inmate.
The corrections officer was put on paid leave after the Aug. 4 suicide of Billy Slagle days before his scheduled execution.
The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says the officer falsified an electronic log documenting how often checks were done on Slagle while he was on death row in Chillicothe.
But he will be reinstated under a "last chance" agreement he signed Wednesday with the state and the employees' union. According to the agreement released by the department, the state will hold off on removing the guard for two years unless he violates works rules and department policies.
Messages were left with a union spokeswoman.
