CLEVELAND -- An 8-year-old boy has been reunited with his father after being taken when a woman took off in the family's car from a convenience store.
According to police, the father stopped at a store on Woodland near Sophia and left the child in the running car. That's when an unknown woman got into the car and took off in it with the child still inside.
An off-duty officer working part-time in the area of Fleet Avenue heard the radio broadcast for the stolen car and spotted it. The off-duty officer followed the stolen car until officers from the Fourth District in marked zone cars were able to take over the pursuit.
Police stopped the woman driving the stolen car near Canal and Granger in Valley View and took her into custody.
The child was not hurt.
The department credits the off-duty officer who initially spotted the car, Patrol Office Dylan Demas, with helping to bring a quick end to a potentially dangerous situation.
Police also say the incident is a reminder to never leave a child unattended in a car especially if the vehicle is left running.
