BROOK PARK -- A Brook Park man died of natural causes, leading to the death of his wife who was unable to care for herself and succumbed to hypothermia.

According to Brook Park police, they responded along with firefighters to 6336 Almont Drive Monday shortly after noon after the couple's daughter entered the home and found their lifeless bodies.

The Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office ruled Tuesday that David Miller, 71, died as a result of atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Shirley Miller, 73, died of hypothermia due to environmental exposure.

Hugh Shannon, administrator for the medical examiner's office, could not provide approximate times or dates of when either died.

"Mr. Miller was the caregiver to his wife and apparently expired first of natural causes," he said in an email. "Unfortunately, without her caregiver, Mrs. Miller succumbed to hypothermia as temperatures within the home dropped after his death."

Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson asks that, during winter months and especially when temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing, members of the public check up on elderly relatives, friends and neighbors, who may be more susceptible to the effects of the extreme cold.
