CLEVELAND -- Contributions into the Salvation Army's iconic red kettles are down across Northeast Ohio.

The red kettle campaign raised $4.6 million dollars last year, but this year donations have dipped 50 percent.

The Salvation Army says a shortened shopping season, increase in online shopping and credit card use instead of cash have all contributed to the decline.

"We are calling on all of our generous supporters to do what they can because every little bit helps. Never underestimate the power of a penny," says Major Evan Hickman, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio Division.

Every penny in the kettle contributions goes toward helping local families in need. The money helps provide meals, clothing, shelter and many other services all year.

You can also donate online at www.onlineredkettle.org or by texting "Change" to 80888 for a one-time $10 dollar charge added to your cell phone bill. Monetary gifts can also be given by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
