CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland man who broke into the West Park home of a 91-year-old widow, beat her and stole money to feed his heroin addiction has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty confirmed today.

Dean Murphy, 40, entered a guilty plea on Nov. 25 to one count each of aggravated burglary, felonious assault and theft. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph D. Russo today imposed sentences of nine, eight and one year, respectively, on those counts and ordered Murphy to serve them consecutively.

Around noon on Sept. 27, Murphy broke into a home on the same street where his parents live. The 6-foot-2-inch Murphy confronted the petite victim in her kitchen and punched her in the face and jaw and knocked her to floor. She sustained broken ribs, a fractured vertebra and other injuries that required hospitalization and a stay in rehabilitation.

Murphy then took money from the victim's purse before fleeing.

The victim spoke at today's sentencing, telling Murphy he "shouldn't pick on a little old lady."

At the time of the attack, Murphy was free while awaiting sentencing in Lorain County on burglary and other charges. He was also on probation in Cuyahoga County for breaking and entering and possessing criminal tools.

"This crime was a shock to the conscience of an entire community,'' said Assistant County Prosecutor Frankie Goldberg, who prosecuted this case for the State of Ohio.

"This coward attacked a 91-year-old victim and left her bleeding and alone. Shame on him."
